Library Catalog

The library catalog is available online at: http://silc.swau.edu/aquabrowser/. We use the Library of Congress Classification system to organize most of the material in our library. Using this system, each book is given its own call number. The call number is used to locate the books on the shelf.

Dictionaries & Encyclopedias

Reference materials such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs and atlases provide facts and statistics and are usually arranged so information can be easily located. They can be used to narrow or broaden a search topic or provide needed details for your research. Most of our reference material is located on first floor. Periodicals include journals, magazines and newspapers. All of our periodicals are shelved in alphabetical order by the title. We keep two issues of our current subscriptions on first floor. Print Indexes

Indexes are used to locate citations (the information on where the article is found and who wrote it) of articles on a specific subject or subjects. When you have found the citation(s), you go to the shelves to locate the article(s). Articles not available in our library may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Some print indexes that cover many topics are listed below. These indexes are shelved on third floor, unless otherwise noted. Librarians and Student Assistants are available if you need help using these indexes.

Databases

Our library databases, found on our web page, offer many options for locating material in different subject areas. These databases are online indexes. Some of them have only the citation (the information on where the article is found and who wrote it) and an abstract (a short description of the article). Other databases offer some or all full-text articles. In other words, the whole article is on the computer. These general databases are listed below.

EBSCOhost


Academic Search Premier – The greatest number of full text, peer-reviewed journals found in any database. Provides a broad spectrum of data in social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.

EBSCO Animals – Provides in-depth information on the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia – Includes 25,000 entries on a wide variety of topics.

MasterFile Premier – Provides full text for nearly 2,050 general reference publications. Also features 5,000 full text Magill book reviews and the American Heritage Dictionary, 4th edition.

Military and Government Collection – Full text for more than 400 periodicals and journals. Abstracts for additional sources of news and scholarly information on all branches of the military.

Regional Business News – Provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

Vocational & Career Collection
– Provides full-text coverage from more than 350 trade and industry-related periodicals of interest to high schools, community colleges, trade institutions, and the general public.

EBSCOhost Español

Interfaz en español contraduccion de los articulos. Base de datos sobre muchos temas - incluye texto completo. Los articulos están traducidos por un programa de la computadora del inglés.
Spanish interface for EBSCOhost with articles translated into Spanish. Database covers a variety of material, including extensive full text articles. Articles are translated from English by a computer program.

Encyclopedia Britannica


Full-text access to the encyclopedia, atlas, and dictionary articles of Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as EB’s recommended Websites.

AltPressIndex – Indexes journals from 456 sources. Covers cultural, economic, political & social change. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

ArticleFirst – Index to keywords and titles of articles in 15,000 sources, from 1990 to the present.

ConsumerIndex – Abstracts to general interest articles, tests, warnings, recalls, and reports, from 170 sources covering all aspects of consumerism and consumer protection, from1986 to present. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

Dissertation Abs – Indexes dissertations and theses from institutions in North America and Europe.

ECO – An OCLC collection of scholarly journals. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

FactSearch – Provides critical statistical evidence and date-linked data from over 1,000 sources that can be used to emphasis a point or reinforce an argument. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

MediaRevDigest
– Reviews of educational and entertainment media from 200 review sources, 1989 to the present.

NewsAbs – Significant items from over 50 U.S. national and regional newspapers.

PerAbs – Periodical abstracts from general and academic journals from over 2,000 sources. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

Reader’sGuideAbs
– Contains abstracts on articles covering consumer affairs, current events, education, fashion, fine arts, health & nutrition and sports. Also includes some book reviews. Articles from 379 sources. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

SIRS Researcher – Abstracts on social, scientific, political, and economic issues worldwide with information from over 1,500 sources.
WilsonSelectPlus – Full text articles in science, humanities, education and business from 1,652 sources.

WorldCat – A consortial catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide.

Handbook of Latin American Studies

Bibliography of Latin American resources, produced by the U.S. Library of Congress. Includes materials from 1935 to the present, with many open URL links to full-text resources.

Handbook of Texas Online

Multidisciplinary encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture sponsored by the Texas State Historical Association and the General Libraries at UT Austin.

LexisNexis

Full text news, business information, legal research, medical information and reference.

NetLibrary

Provides access to a collection of 28,274 e-books. NetLibrary eBooks are digital full-text versions of books such as reference works, scholarly monographs, literature and fiction in all subjects.

SDA Periodical Index

Indexing to approximately 40 Seventh-day Adventist journals and magazines. Currently the index covers the years 1977 to the present.

Sites found on the Web should always be critically evaluated for authority, accuracy, audience, coverage, currency, objectivity and purpose.
