This guide provides you with a good starting point for conducting research in Spanish language and literature at the Southwestern Adventist University Library. As you explore the library’s resources you will find additional materials such as videos and DVD’s.
We use the Library of Congress Classification system to organize most of the material in our library. Using this system, each book is given its own call number. The call number is used to locate the books on the shelf.
Material related to Spanish can be found in the following call number ranges or areas.

Reference materials such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs and atlases provide facts and statistics and are usually arranged so information can be easily located. They can be used to narrow or broaden a search topic or provide needed details for your research. Most of our reference material is located on first floor. However, the call numbers that begin with [MAIN] are located on second floor.

Periodicals include journals, magazines and newspapers. All of our periodicals are shelved in alphabetical order by the title. We keep two issues of our current subscriptions on first floor. Back issues and titles not currently received are shelved on the east side of third floor.
Our library databases, found on our web page, offer many options for locating material in the area of Spanish language and literature. These databases are online indexes. Some of them have only the citation (the information on where the article is found and who wrote it) and an abstract (a short description of the article). Other databases offer some or all full-text articles. In other words, the whole article is on the computer. The ones most likely to help you in your research are listed below.
Twentieth-Century American Poetry – Includes 50,000 poems drawn from 750 volumes by over 300 poets, some Chicano, Hispanic, Latino and Mexican.
Twentieth-Century English Poetry - A collection of 598 volumes of poetry by 283 poets from 1900 to the
present day, including W.B. Yeats, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy,
Wilfred Owen, Thom Gunn, Fleur Adcock, Paul Muldoon, Tony Harrison,

MedicLatina – Provides access to full-text from 100 peer-reviewed medical research and investigative journals in Spanish.

Spanish interface for EBSCOhost with articles translated into Spanish. Database covers a variety of material, including extensive full text articles. Articles are translated from English by a computer program.
Academic Search Premier – The greatest number of full text, peer-reviewed journals found in any database. Provides a broad spectrum of data in social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.
MasterFile Premier – Provides full text for nearly 2,050 general reference publications. Also features 5,000 full text Magill book reviews and the American Heritage Dictionary, 4th edition.
Medline - An abstracts and citations database for 4,600 current biomedical journals, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, and other portions of the health care field. Contains some full text.
Military and Government Collection – Full text for more than 400 periodicals and journals. Abstracts for additional sources of news and scholarly information on all branches of the military.
Regional Business News – Provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.
Full-text access to the encyclopedia, atlas, and dictionary articles of Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as EB’s recommended Websites. Includes a world atlas and country comparisons.
AH Search – (Arts and Humanities Search). Indexes the world’s leading arts and humanities journals from over 1,100 sources, some in Spanish or by Hispanic authors. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.
ArticleFirst – Indexes articles from more than 15,000 sources from 1990 to the present. Contains some Spanish language sources or authors. Covers business, humanities, popular culture, science, social science and technology. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.
ClasePeriodica – Indexes more than 2,600 scholarly, Latin American journals that focus on the social sciences and the humanities. Covers 1978 to the present.
Dissertation Abs – Indexes dissertations and theses from institutions in North America and Europe.
ECO – An OCLC collection of scholarly journals, some Spanish language. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.

Reader’sGuideAbs – Contains abstracts on articles covering consumer affairs, current events, education, fashion, fine arts, health & nutrition and sports. Also includes some book reviews. Articles from 379 sources, some Spanish language. Includes some full text from WilsonSelectPlus.
WilsonSelectPlus – Full text articles in science, humanities, education and business from 1,652 sources, including some Spanish language.
Bibliography of Latin American resources, produced by the U.S. Library of Congress. Includes materials from 1935 to the present, with many open URL links to full-text resources. Includes options for English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Provides access to a collection of 28,274 e-books. NetLibrary eBooks are digital full-text versions of books such as reference works, scholarly monographs, literature and fiction in all subjects. Includes a Spanish language interface.
Indexing to approximately 40 Seventh-day Adventist journals and magazines. Currently the index covers the years 1977 to the present. The majority of the articles indexed are in English, however, some articles in Spanish are available.
The Web sites listed below were evaluated by a reference librarian. Sites found on the Web should always be critically evaluated for authority, accuracy, audience, coverage, currency, objectivity and purpose. There are additional sites related to Spanish language and literature that may be reached through some of the university sites listed at the end of this section. Not all of these sites have been evaluated. Be sure to use your “critical thinking skills” if you choose to use these additional web resources or to find other sites on your own.

Contains a resource and information area for educators, as well as information for students and prospective students on test preparation, financial aid planning and career advancement.
College and University Rankings (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
Identifies top colleges and universities in various areas. Contains links to many ranking services, along with cautionary notes and a discussion of the ongoing controversy over rankings.
GRE – Graduate Record Examinations (Educational Testing Service)
Free test prep materials available for the General Test and for the Subject Tests. Also contains information about changes to the GRE, which are to be implemented in the fall of 2007.
Internet Detective (Intute Virtual Training Suite)
Free online tutorial designed to help college and university students develop their Internet research skills. Looks at the critical thinking required when using the Internet for research and offers practical advice on evaluating the quality of web sites. Follow the tutorial or explore the site on your own.
Includes Spanish-English dictionaries, multi-language dictionaries and specialty Spanish language dictionaries as well as links to dictionaries in many other languages.
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
Web site for ACTFL the only national organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. Includes links to related sites.

Material for teachers, students, and parents searching for high-quality material on the internet in the subject areas of literature and language arts, foreign languages, art and culture, and history and social studies.
Links to a wide variety of Spanish language web sites. Includes sites for Spanish dialects, common errors in Spanish usage, teaching and translation, Spanish dictionary webs site and much more. Some links are broken, but the majority are still working links.
Completely free, online multilingual picture dictionary designed especially for ESL students and beginning English, French, German, Spanish and Italian language learners of all ages.
Provides links to sites featuring free educational resources for teaching and learning other languages. Cultural, linguistic, media and historic information can be found by language in these pages.
Latin American Network Information Center. Facilitates access to primarily research related, Internet-based information to, from, or on Latin America. Information may be accessed in English, Portuguese or Spanish.
