The courage to teach : exploring the inner landscape of a teacher's life

Writing about school reform in Austin, Texas, prolific education writer Larry Cuban examines the past and discusses the future of reform in the American K-12 system. Drawing from his experience as high school teacher, district superintendent, and university professor, Cuban analyses the impact of government policies and strategies, such as the No Child Left Behind Act and segregation and desegregation legislation, to raise student achievement. Cuban discusses strategies such as giving parents more choices to pick a school for their kids in order to increase the competition for students among public schools. The work of improving Austin’s schools, like many other urban school systems across the nation, is ongoing. To the extent that parent’s views and the daily experiences of teachers and students in the classroom help shape educational policies, there is hope. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about improving educational outcomes for all students.
