FEY, TINA, 1970-
A comedian, writer/actor, and business lady, Tina Fey is well known for her movies and television programs. But who would have thought an autobiography was in the realm of success for the star of Baby Mama, Date Night, Saturday Night Live (SNL), and 30 Rock? I believe that is one of the things that’s made Bossypants to be such an enjoyable read—nobody would have seen it coming. The openness in her writing helps us see that life is not always perfect and people fail many times, but we just have to keep living it.
In this series of humorous anecdotes, Fey takes us through her life experiences, from being a certified nerd, to her search for beauty, and finding love in marriage and family, no detail is left unsaid. Fey is not afraid to get personal and share the good and bad times alike. She speaks on how her husband was fearful of flying for the longest time and how she felt depressed after realizing she could not properly breast feed her child. She shares some pointless relationships and details of how she doesn't feel beautiful, yet she is okay with it. From reading you can see she knows that nobody's life is perfect and is bold enough to share her experiences that deal with her imperfections.
In one chapter, Tina shares negative comments found on the internet written about her. Each comment has a witty and sarcastic response from Fey. One person commented saying she was ugly, overrated, and mean. Fey's response was to correct the wording of these offensive comments. This shows that she takes her critics lightly and knows how to laugh at herself.
Another example of the blemish in Tina Fey's life is in her experiences on SNL. She never really made it big on the show until she began doing imitations of politician, Sarah Palin. She had actually quit the show before portraying this character, and none of her relatives even noticed, because they called to let her know she needed to do a sketch on Palin. Tina Fey returned to SNL to act as Sarah Palin for six weeks in hopes that it would bring attention to her show 30 Rock. Though the plan did not progress as she would have liked, her portrayal of Sarah Palin will be remembered for a long time.
Bossypants has helped me see that life is full of ups and downs and we should take it easy and accept the life we are given. Tomorrow is always a new day and success could be just a trial away. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good laugh and simple inspiration!
