Waal, F. B. M. de
That cheetah overlooking the horizon on the cover of this book made it stand out from the rest. It and the title Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are? really made me think. Are we smart enough? I decided to find out. Ethologist Frans De Waal's focus is to find out what animals think, how they react, and why they do what they do in different scenarios.
Taking his work very seriously, De Waal describes research in a way that helps you visualize it. With uncomplicated vocabulary he reaches out to to anyone who is interested in learning about animals. Complete with a table of contents, notes for each chapter, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index, the book is also an easy to navigate source for further reading.
I recommend this book. The content is informative and the comparisons among animal behaviors interesting. A research-based read, this is nonetheless an enjoyable one.
