Pick a topic that interests you
Check your syllabus for suggestions and details about the assignment
Check the first floor of the library for encyclopedias about your topic - they have lots of useful ideas and basic information!
Talk with your professor about your topic
Don't
Pick something that has been overdone or that other students are likely to write about.
Worry about having enough material -- the library and its databases have lots of articles, books, and other sources on all sorts of topics!
Wait until the last minute -- even with a great topic, you will need time to find sources and write and revise your paper
